COTN makes a board with forums (and links to chat rooms that are hosted on another web site) available to its users. By posting personal information online that is publicly accessible, you may receive unsolicited messages from other parties in return. The chat rooms are integrated with the COTN forum database, with the good faith intention that the chat rooms be accessible only to registered forum members, using registered forum usernames and passwords.
Our privacy policy is that detailed logs are kept of all chat room visits -- without exception -- including the presence of lurkers and all dialogue (including all dialogue in so-called "private chat rooms" or so-called "instant messaging"). These chat access logs are retained indefinitely.
Our privacy policy is that these chat access logs are not examined in detail except to prepare the posting of scheduled topic chat sessions (typically question-and-answer chat sessions) and to follow up on abuse complaints.
In the event that a complaint is filed regarding your behavior in the chat rooms, the chat logs can and will be examined to determine the IP address you used to make your postings, the exact time of each posting, and a complete transcript of your chat visit.
If the administrators of your COTN forums believe that your posting was abusive or threatening, then some or all of this log information may be sent to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and law enforcement agencies in the form of a documented complaint against you. Your ISP is easily determined by examination of your IP address. Your ISP can correlate our logs with their own logs to determine your identity. If your behavior violates the Terms Of Service agreement you have with your ISP, your ISP may decide to close your account.
While COTN agrees to make a good faith effort to follow up on complaints, it makes no guarantee that abuse can be prevented in the chat rooms and assumes no liability for the conversations which take place there.
To report abuse or inappropriate use of the chat rooms, send email to admin@communityonthe.net and provide details of the event. For best followup, please file your complaints when they are fresh, and include the date, time stamp, and screen names involved to help us go quickly to the relevant logs.
